About Namac


Naval Maritime Academy, Mumbai (NAMAC) was set up in Nov 1998 to impart training on STCW Modular Courses to naval personnel desirous of joining the Merchant Navy as a second career, post retirement from active service of the Indian Navy. The Academy is administered by the Headquarters, Western Naval Command, Mumbai and is approved by the Director General of Shipping, Govt of India.

NAMAC is located within the premises of a naval base, INS Kunjali, on the sea front at Colaba point, the southernmost tip of Mumbai. Away from the hustle and bustle of a metropolis, NAMAC provides an enviable nautical environment conducive for maritime training. RC Church and Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 3 provide well known landmarks to reach the Academy which is well connected by BEST buses and taxi service from both CST and Churchgate stations.

The Academy is a leading maritime training institute conducting basic and advanced STCW modular courses approved by the Director General(DG) of Shipping, Government of India. NAMAC is a pioneer in conducting offshore safety courses adhering to publicly available international quality standards in meeting the requirements of the Offshore Industry.

NAMAC conforms to the requirement of ISO 9001 : 2008 as assessed by ABS Quality Evaluation. NAMAC was conferred with Samudra Manthan Award 2011 for being the best Offshore Training Institute in India.

Courses at NAMAC can be booked only by citizens of India & Nepal or by individuals holding dual citizenship with a valid Indian Passport.

Executive Board

The Executive Board comprises of 8 Trustees under the aegis of the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command. Headed by the Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command – a Vice Admiral, the Board meets as required to decide on policy issues that enhance training.

  • Director. Generally a senior retired Naval Officer appointed by the Executive Board
  • Deputy Director (Training). A serving Naval Officer appointed by Naval Headquarters
  • Deputy Director (Administration) A serving Naval Officer appointed by Naval Headquarters
  • Deputy Director (Coastal and Offshore Training Wing). A serving Naval Officer appointed by Naval Headquarters
  • Accounts Officer

Faculty

The faculty is drawn from qualified seafarers of both the Merchant and Indian Navy. The permanent and visiting lecturers include Extra Masters, Master Mariners, Chief Engineers, QHSE experts from the offshore industry, Doctors, Educational specialists and Indian Naval Officers with expertise on specialised subjects viz marine commandos, helicopter pilots etc. The instructors are senior retired Naval Sailors who have vast experience in seamanship and fire fighting.


Feedback on various aspects of training & administrative support is obtained from candidates who undergo courses at NAMAC. This feedback is obtained just prior to course completion.
